Build The Hawk Pro

This guide provides instruction for assembly of the Hawk Quadracopter. Full assembly is required. This kit includes a carbon fiber frame, motor controllers, motor wiring, and brushless motors. It uses an APM flight controller, with more sophisticated capabilities.


1. QXA550-S - Overview

Welcome to the Hawk Pro Quadracopter kit! In this Guide you will learn how to fully assemble and configure this MultiWii Controlled Quadrocopter. To complete this Guide you will have to order all the components from the Kit on the overview page. All components come from Hobby King and you will need to gather the necessary tools as described below the kit components list. This Quadracopter is capable of all basic tasks, and even some photography. This unit can be upgraded for using a GPS. This Guide will teach you how to set up the X-copter configuration, of which we have deemed the best way to get power from the motors.

2. QXA550-S - Charging Your Battery

In this lesson you will be setting up your battery charger for the first time. If you will be using this charger for only this one battery you will only need to go through this setup once, and the charger will remember the settings. however it is always good to double check that settings are correct.

3. QXA550-S - Frame Assembly

This lesson shows how to assemble the Turnigy Talon V2.0 carbon fiber frame. This frame is 550mm across, from tip to tip diagonal. In this lesson you will be using a lot of different parts, and many of them are small and easy to lose or drop. Be sure to keep yourself organized, using an organizer storage bin or something similar.

6. QXA550-S - Mounting Receiver

This lesson shows how to mount the radio controlled (R/C) receiver to the Quadracopter frame. Communication between the operator and the drone is accomplished by using a DSM2 2.4 GHz six channel receiver. This kit will be using an orange RX R615 receiver which is compatible with Spektrum or JR, DSM2 transmitters. If you plan to use a different brand transmitter you will need a compatible receiver for that transmitter. SIDrones kits require transmitters and receivers with at least 5 channels to be able to configure various flight modes.

7. QXA550-S - Transmitter Setup

There are 2 modes for transmitters. Much like how different countries drive on different sides of the road, different countries use different configurations of the same 4 main controls for the flying quadracopters. This lesson introduces you to the Spektrum DX6i transmitter using mode 2. In this mode, the throttle is on the left. If using the Orange RX DSM2/X RC transmitter, the settings and setup are the same as theSpektrum DX6i transmitter, however the pictures note the setup for the Orange RX. If you are using a different transmitter then you will need to review its directions for specifics, but the same concepts still apply.

8. QXA550-S - Calibrating Motor Controllers

This lesson shows how to calibrate the motor controllers. This is the most complex, but most important of all the calibrations. If at anytime during your quad ownership you experience poor flights, re-calibrating the motor controllers should be your first troubleshooting step. Some advanced users may prefer to use a 4 in one calibrator.

9. QXA550-S - Flight Controller Wiring

This lesson describes the steps for connecting the receiver that has already been attached to the frame. In this step you will be using signal wires, that as you recall, consist of a positive, ground and data wire. Power is typically red, ground is typically a darker color like brown or black and data is typically a lighter color like yellow or white.

10. QXA550-S -Flight Controller Configuration

At this point you have a fully assembled quadracopter with the firmware installed. In this step you will upload the settings for the firmware. One of these uploads will include PID flies, which controls the flight and stability of your quadracopter.

11. QXA550-S - Attaching propellers

This lesson shows how to attach each of the quadracopter’s 4 propellers. Quadracopters keep from spinning in circles by having 2 propellers spinning clockwise and 2 counterclockwise. The motors do the work of spinning different directions, however the propellers must match, note that each propeller is labeled 1045 or 1045R. the 1045 stands for 10 inch diameter, and 45 denotes the pitch. The R, or lack thereof is the part you care about, R spin clockwise and ones with no R (or L) spin counterclockwise.
